Turmeric and Black Pepper - What a great combination!

There are so many fads out there these days, especially in the health and wellness field, it's really hard to know which products really work and who to trust. Everyone seems to be trying to better themselves and live a more healthy lifestyle, which is a wonderful thing! But some times it seems large brands and companies take advantage of that and put out "healthy alternatives" and supplements claiming all sorts of things. Turmeric supplement is a little different though because even though it's a newer product here in the US, it has been used in Asia and other parts of the world for years and years.

    What really is Turmeric?

Per Wikipedia, turmeric is a flowering plant, Curcuma longa of the ginger family native to India and Southeast Asia. The roots of the plant are used in cooking, which after harvested are used fresh or boiled in water and dried the ground into a powder. Turmeric powder has a deep orange-yellow color and is commonly used in many Asian cuisines. It has a warm, bitter, black pepper like flavor and an earthy, mustard-like aroma. It has also had a long use in Ayurvedic medicine where it is known under the name haridra.

Do I need Black Pepper in my Turmeric Supplement?

According to Consumer Labs, Black pepper is not necessary for turmeric to be effective, but it can be helpful. Black pepper contains a compound, piperine, which inhibits the metabolic breakdown of turmeric compounds in the gut and the liver. This allows higher levels of turmeric compounds to remain in the body (i.e., it increases its bioavailability), which may increase the effects of turmeric. So basically black pepper helps turmeric work better and more efficiently.

How to take a Turmeric Supplement?

Be aware that the most common problem with turmeric is making sure that its compounds are absorbed from the gut. You will absorb little turmeric if not taken along with fats or oils, which is why it's best to take turmeric and curcumin with a meal containing fats or oils. This is so you get the most out of the product and are seeing full results.

Benefits of Turmeric with Black Pepper

Turmeric has so many great benefits, some that many are unaware. It has been used as a dietary supplement for inflammation; arthritis; stomach, skin, liver, and gallbladder problems; cancer; and other conditions. Check out some of these great things that you might benefit from by taking this wonderful all-natural supplement!

    1. May Aid in Weight Loss

Turmeric is not only amazing to combat inflammation and joint pain, but it can be used as an aid in weight loss. The powerful combination of turmeric and black pepper makes it a natural fat-burning booster that helps prevent weight gain. Black pepper, in particular, is thermogenic, which means it will increase your body’s metabolism and increase the number of calories you burn. Then combine that with turmeric’s ability to lower bad cholesterol, what do you have to lose (besides a few extra pounds)!

    2. Decrease Inflammation

One of the most well-known benefits of Turmeric is its powerful impact on inflammation. Especially when it’s paired with black pepper, it has shown to inhibit the activity of certain enzymes which often lead to inflammation.

    3. Reduce Pain

Not only is turmeric with black pepper great for inflammation, but it can help reduce pain and arthritis symptoms right at the source. It is known to be a natural pain reliever, in addition to having anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties.

    4. Support Digestive Health

Turmeric stimulates the production of bile which helps promote healthy digestion. By doing this it helps ensure optimal digestion and prevents digestive issues like excess gas and bloating. Turmeric and black pepper have been used any many forms of traditional medicine to help soothe digestive issues and optimize nutrient absorption. Curcumin in turmeric has shown to be therapeutic for inflammatory digestive disorders like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Also, piperine in black pepper can help promote proper digestion by stimulating digestive enzymes.

    5. Contain Cancer-Fighting Properties

There have been studies in recent years that turmeric and black pepper contains cancer-fighting properties. These studies have shown that curcumin in turmeric could help block some of the growth and spread of cancer cells, plus preserve healthy cells. In some test tube studies, the compound piperine in black pepper has shown to help kill off cancer cells while also preventing tumor formation. In these studies, research has shown piperine to be beneficial in colon cancer treatment.
